The EastWest Institute proudly hosted the 2017 Global Cyberspace Cooperation Summit with the UC Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity on March 14-16.

The EastWest Institute’s Global Cooperation in Cyberspace Initiative anticipates future security risks, defines the outlines of potential conflict and brings together the people who can do something about it.

The seventh cyber summit, organized in partnership with the UC Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity, brought together policymakers, business leaders and technical experts to discuss the most pressing issues in international cyberspace, including securing the Internet of Things, balancing encryption and lawful access to data, developing norms of behavior, improving the security of information and communications technology (ICT) and strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure.

 

The Topics

An invitation-only event, this meeting of international actors aims to coordinate and consolidate progress, showcase results and promote collective action.

The cyber summits provide a crucial forum for building international, private-public action to foster international cooperation in cyberspace. Breakthrough groups, aligned with the initiative’s objectives of enhancing deterrence against malicious cyber activities, improving the security of Internet products and services, and maintaining efficient information and technology flows across borders, carry the program forward.

2017 Breakthrough Groups

Promoting Norms of Responsible Behavior in Cyberspace​

EWI will support the Global Commission on the Stability of Cyberspace to facilitate new norms, policies and initiatives that support the security and stability of cyberspace through research, information exchanges, capacity building and advocating proposals for action.

Ubiquitous Encryption and Lawful Government Access

Composed of a diverse set of corporate, government and law enforcement leaders from around the world, this breakthrough group strives to challenge common assumptions in the encryption debate with the goal of creating a more realistic and nuanced discussion through off-the-record conversations and original research.

Resilient Cities and the Internet of Things

This breakthrough group will chart ways to increase the cyber resilience of urban environments on a global basis, looking at ways to improve readiness, responsiveness and reinvention.

Systemic Risk and Cyber Insurance

This breakthrough group will examine systemic risk beyond financial systems, its impact on general business continuity and its potential for cascading failures, and the implications for the insurance industry. It will develop and disseminate approaches to mitigating risk and improving loss prevention across key industries worldwide.

Increasing the Global Availability and Use of Secure ICT Products and Services

This breakthrough group will continue to promote the Buyers Guide at meetings and in discussions with leaders around the world, focusing particularly on large buyers of ICT and standards bodies. It will also continuously solicit feedback to improve the coverage of the guide and its usability.
